The Return of Sebewaing Beer
Written By: Rex

The Return of
Sebewaing Beer

The township of Sebewaing, located on the Saginaw Bay side of the thumb, is celebrating its 150th Anniversary and as part of their celebration they created special commemorative six-packs of Sebewaing Beer. The beer that made Sebewaing famous.
Sebewaing Brewing Company brewed Sebewaing Beer until 1965. The brewery began life as the E.O. Braendle Brewery in 1880. A fire destroyed the wood frame building in 1893. It was rebuilt with brick walls three feet thick and enjoyed a new life until Prohibition took its breath away. The Sebewaing name began during Prohibition when in 1927, the Sebewaing Products Company was organized to produce malt extract. As sales exceeded a million dollars per year, the brewery became Sebewaing’s main identity. With the brewery responsible for putting the town of Sebewaing on the map, Sebewaing Beer is a natural for use during the town’s festivities. The main event took place during the 2003 Sebewaing Michigan Sugar Festival which ran June 19 through 22. The township contracted Michigan Brewing Company of Webberville to make their beer. The beer was described as a “Sebewaing-like brew in line with today’s tastes.”
The 2003 Sebewaing Beer comes in six-packs featuring historical labels once used by the brewery. Each six-pack contains two each of three label recreations; the Sebewaing Flying Pheasant, Golden Pheasant, and the Sport label. Local Sebewaing merchants now offer these special commemorative six-packs for sale until the supply of this limited edition runs out. MBG
